This flu season we face both the seasonal flu —and the new H1N1 virus. The good news is that the H1N1 virus is acting like a normal flu virus, but the bad news is that few people are protected against this newer strain.
To fight the flu or a cold, many people believe antibiotics will help. But in fact, these drugs are useless against flu and colds. There are other ways you can protect yourself and your family from the flu bug, including regular hand washing and getting a flu shot. Ask your doctor if you are not sure about whether you should get the flu shot.
When you prepare for the flu season, you stay one step ahead of the flu viruses. But in the event you develop flu-like symptoms, stay home from work or school.
Here are some ways to help you get through the flu:
• Rest in bed and drink lots of water or juice.
• Call your doctor if— your temperature is 100 degrees or higher and continues for 3-5 days, it is hard to breathe, you feel very tired or are unable to eat or drink.
• Call our 24-hour Nurse Advice Line if you can’t reach your doctor. You’ll get the help you need at 1-888-244-IEHP (4347) or 1-888-880-0833 for TTY users, 7 days a week, including holidays.
