Is there a lot of paperwork with Healthy Kids?

Is there a lot of paperwork with Healthy Kids?


After your initial application there is no more paperwork for ONE YEAR. Then, it is just a simple renewal form.

Is the application difficult?
No. You can apply right over the phone with the help of IEHP’s bilingual Enrollment Assistants. Just call 1-866-294- IEHP (4347)/ TTY 1-800-720-4347.

Do I pay my monthly premiums?
No. There are no monthly premiums for the Healthy Kids Program.

This is not my child. Can I still apply for him/her?

Legal guardians, stepparents, foster parents or caretaker relatives may apply for insurance for a child. Only the parent’s income will be considered. Your income will not be used to qualify the child.

If I’m pregnant, can I apply for Healthy Kids before my baby is born?
No.

Is the Healthy Kids Program Medi-Cal or welfare?

No. Healthy Kids is for children who do not qualify for the Healthy Families Program or Medi-Cal.

It is not totally free health care. You pay very low co-payments for services.

Will applying for Healthy Kids affect my immigration status or cause problems for other family members?

No. INS guidelines issued May 26, 1999, permit immigrants and their children to use the health care benefits without affecting their Immigration Status.

This includes Healthy Kids, the Healthy Families Program, WIC, Medi-Cal, and many other programs.

INS will not consider immigrants a Public Charge just because they use these health care benefits.

INS will not deny your legal admission to the U.S.

INS will not deny your application for legal permanent residency.

What if my child currently has insurance, but I want to switch?

If your or your spouse’s employer covers your child today, your child is NOT eligible for Healthy Kids.

If you disenroll your child from their current employer-paid health insurance, they would not be eligible to enroll in the Healthy Kids program for 3 months.
